Reviewing your medical records is a sound decision; it’s also your right as a patient.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act (HIPAA) provides patients the right to obtain copies of their medical records, which include doctor’s notes, medical test results, lab reports, and billing information.
Medical records are personal, and therefore to protect the patient’s privacy, you may only request them if:
- You are a patient seeking your medical records
- You are the parent or legal guardian of the patient
- If you are a caregiver or advocate with written permission from the patient
Additionally, your primary care doctor and other third-party entities to whom you have granted the right when signing a patient registration form can also review your medical records.
